What I’m Listening To on 01/02/2019:

For the uninitiated and those that couldn’t see it in his features, Lukas Nelson is the son of the legendary Country singer Willie Nelson.  I saw them live in 2014 in Colorado, and I left with two lasting impressions.  One, was that the music of Lukas was nothing like his fathers.  His band is nothing short of a rock band, and to be honest I didn’t leave very impressed except for one thing.  The other lasting impression was that they played an absolutely beautiful rendition of “Amazing Grace” on the guitar in tribute to the recently passed Robin Williams.

About two years ago, while in a youtube rabbit hole of live concerts I stumbled upon the fact that Lukas and his daddy did a cover of “Just Breathe” by Pearl Jam.  Pearl Jam being one of my favorite bands, and the dichotomy of Willie and Lukas’ respective styles led me to give it a listen.  In the concert I saw him at you could tell there were similarities in the father and son’s voices, but good god does it pop out here.  I was literally typing this as the song played in the background and the two are almost indistinguishable.

This put Lukas back on my radar, but I never really sat down and listened to him specifically.  He’d pop up on my spotify every now and then, but I never really was hooked.  Then I heard this song for the first time today (it came out in 2017) and it’s settled.  I’m a fan now.  Between the more folky style he has now as opposed the full-on rock style from 5 years ago and those raspy paternal vocals, I apologize for ever doubting you Lukas.  Rock on.

P.S-Him jamming his dick off on the guitar using his teeth is an all-time move.
